Entry requirements

Potential apprentices are selected for the apprenticeship by their school. Pupils will go through a recruitment process arranged by college/learning provider, which we encourage you to get involved in.  Pupils should have an understanding and appreciation of different technologies, as well as soft skills such as the capacity to work efficiently and in teams. Good communication and IT skills would be beneficial.

Progression and development

Pupils will have the right skills to move from this to a Modern Apprenticeship in a range of creative subjects, such as creative and digital media, creative and cultural skills, or digital applications. They may decide to move on to self employment, or further or higher education. If you look to hire, the Foundation Apprenticeship offers you an opportunity to spot talented pupils, and assess their skills on a longer term than a regular interview process would allow.

Your role

As an employer, you can decide what level of involvement you have in the Foundation Apprenticeship programme. You can discuss this with the learning provider you’re working with.

There’s no financial cost to you as an employer because the learner is still at school. However, the investment of your time: great or small, can bring you lasting rewards with access to talented and driven young people for your workplace.

The work placement

Pupils study a Foundation Apprenticeship as one of their school subjects usually over fifth and sixth year.

During this apprenticeship each pupil must complete a work placement of approximately one day a week in S6 to help them build the evidence needed to complete the units from the SVQ. Involvement with industry and employers is to be encouraged from the start. Input from an employer is critical not only for inclusion within setting the media project but in supporting the whole journey.

Pupils will learn some of the practical skills that are needed to develop their skills base, therefore there will be industry experience in S5 as well as the placement in S6.
