This Technical Apprenticeship helps you train staff who are likely to progress to branch and customer relationship management roles. It’s suitable for both new starts and experienced staff looking to progress. This apprenticeship provides the skills, knowledge and competence for employees to work in job roles such as branch manager, or business/commercial/customer relationship manager.

The qualification

SCQF level 8

Your employee will study for an SCQF level 8 in Banking.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. However, you should expect a high standard of literacy and numeracy – for example, good grade Nationals/Standard Grades or Highers; or, a proven ability to work at this level, shown through employment or voluntary work.

It’s also essential that you carry out a rigorous initial assessment process, to measure literacy and numeracy skills.

Progression and development

After completing this level, employees can progress to professional qualifications such as:

  • CBI Chartered Banker Diploma/Advanced Diploma/MBA
  • IFS School of Finance Level 6 Diploma in Financial Advice
  • CII Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning
  • CFA Programme
  • BA/BSc/MSc in Financial Services/Banking Practice and Management
  • Branch Managers could progress to Local Director (managing a region of branches.
  • Business/Customer/Commercial Relationship Managers could progress from medium to high – moving to a different grade level. Further progression from here would be Senior Manager, Commercial, managing a team of medium and high turnover relationship managers.

How much will it cost?


We will contribute towards the training costs, paying the learning provider directly in incremental payments throughout the course of the apprenticeship.

Use the contribution tables to work out the funding level for this framework:

Modern Apprenticeship Contribution Table (16-24 age group)
Modern Apprenticeship Contribution Table (25+ age group)

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees who are aged 16 – 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we do encourage all employees to pay the living wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.

It will take between 12-24 months to complete.
