This Modern Apprenticeship offers two levels — for employees beginning their career in the manufacture and production of furniture, furnishings and interiors, and for those wishing to further develop their knowledge and skills. It’s suitable for employees working as a finisher, polisher, soft furnisher, upholsterer or cabinet maker.

What will your apprentice learn?

Your employee will study for a qualification in:

  • Solid Surfaces at SCQF level 5
  • Modern Upholstery at SCQF Level 5
  • Soft Furnishings at SCQF Level 5
  • Furniture Making: Contemporary at SCQF Level 5
  • Furniture Making: Traditional at SCQF Level 5
Entry requirements

Candidates don’t need previous experience at this level.

Progression and development

After completing this level, employees could progress to the SCQF level 6 Modern Apprenticeship.

  • Modern Upholstery at SCQF Level 6
  • Soft Furnishings at SCQF Level 6
  • Furniture Making: Contemporary at SCQF Level 6

Candidates don’t need previous experience at this level.

Progression and development

After completing this level, employees should be in a position to progress within the industry. Suitable employees could also progress further by completing additional courses in the same, or complementary, areas.

How much will it cost?

Training

We will contribute towards the training costs, paying the training provider directly in incremental payments throughout the course of the apprenticeship.

Use the contribution tables to work out the funding level for this framework:

Modern Apprenticeship Contribution Table (16-24 age group)
Modern Apprenticeship Contribution Table (25+ age group)

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees who are aged 16 – 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Salary

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we do encourage all employees to pay the living wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.

Time to complete

It will take between 12-24 months to complete.
