Job overview

As a Trainee Software Engineer, you will work within the existing Product Engineering team. They will guide and mentor you as you gain experience in the full range of activities that are required to deliver world-class software solutions. You will develop your skills and experience over time, contributing to everything from analysis, design, development, testing to customer support.

This is a role for someone to build a broad skillset in the context of a global software business. You can expect increasingly challenging goals as you develop your skills and experience, positively contributing to the business at all stages as your career develops.

As well as working in a full-time role, you will have the opportunity to continue your education in the workplace. Agenor Technology will support you through a Graduate Apprenticeship in Software Development for Business at Heriot Watt University Riccarton Campus, Edinburgh. This is a superb opportunity to earn while you learn, following a four-year, structured study programme leading to you graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Software Development for Business.

What might a typical day in this job look like?

At Agenor, no two days are the same so as a Trainee Software Engineer you will be learning new skills everyday.

You will:
- Commit to learning new skills and pursuing the graduate apprenticeship programme
- Demonstrate energy, enthusiasm and a passion for a career as a software engineer
- Develop excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Collaborate and share information, transfer knowledge and expertise to team members
- Work effectively in a fast-paced, complex and dynamic environment
- Take ownership of issues and tasks, seeing them through to successful execution and completion
- Comfortably and confidently operate in an environment where the Agenor Principals govern everything we do

What will I learn?

You will learn a huge amount in this role. Experience has shown that, in this fast-moving world, it is wise not to be too specific. The four primary “learning themes” are as follows:

Teamwork – you’ll learn how to operate effectively within a team, understanding the different contributions, skills and expertise of your colleagues
Processes – you’ll be directly involved in all aspects of the software delivery process, learning about everything from analysing requirements to providing support to users of our solution
Tools – you’ll learn how to use industry-standard tools to support collaboration, development, testing and all other aspects of working as part of a software delivery organisation
Technologies – you’ll learn how to create working business solutions using a variety of technologies, including HTML5, CSS, Java, Javascript and Oracle PL/SQL. These technologies will change over time and you’ll be expected to adapt and learn quickly.

Ultimately, we want to help you become a world-class software engineer, with broad skills and deep levels of expertise in your chosen area.

What qualification or qualities are required?

We are more interested in your attitude and aspirations than your qualifications.

As a guideline, the ideal candidate will have 5 Higher qualifications that would include Maths and English. If you have these qualifications, that’s great. Alternatively, you may have relevant work-based experience, professional certifications and a demonstrable ability to be successful on the programme.
