An excellent opportunity has arisen within our Housing Service where you will work as a Modern Apprentice Joiner within the Construction Trades visiting tenants’ premises to carry out repairs as well as working on capital investment sites, e.g. new build, kitchen refurbishments and window and door replacements.
You will learn how to work to all the various Council Standards including Health & Safety and Customer Service and carry out other duties as required for the Service. As a Modern Apprentice, you will work towards the Carpentry & Joinery Modern Apprenticeship SCQF Level 6 and be willing to undertake any other training relevant to the role.
To assist in the provision of a multi-skilled workforce ensuring that the Council’s quality
and performance objectives are met and to carry out any duties fitting to the post as
directed by supervisors and team leaders.
To assist the Council in providing a customer focussed repairs service and ensure that all
works are carried out to an acceptable standard.
To assist the Council in meeting its duties in relation to health and safety in the
management and delivery of its building repair and improvement work.
To undertake any duties in support of the craft operations as instructed by supervisors
and team leaders
To work towards the a Modern Apprenticeship in Joinery
Working extended hours at short notice
Being available for out of normal working hours e.g., emergency and standby
Visiting tenants premises to carry out repairs; working on capital investment sites
e.g. new build, kitchen refurbishments, external client’s
Working at height or in confined spaces e.g. on scaffolding, lofts
Use of power tools e.g. core drills, hand drills
To learn to carry out all tasks fitting with the grade and skill level of the post holder in
support of the provision of a joinery & multi trade service, for example; Maintenance and General Improvements, Window and Door replacement programme, Kitchen replacement programme, Assist with Bathroom replacements and Adaptations, New Builds
To learn to carry out written and verbal instructions and provide feedback to supervisor or team leader on issues related to tasks to be undertaken
To learn how to liaise with tenants/owners to provide a customer focussed service
To learn how to ensure all operations are carried out in a cost effective manner
To learn how to ensure work is carried out to the required standard and where applicable provide satisfaction survey cards to tenants
To learn how to read, assess and review risk assessments and method statements, ensuring all work is undertaken safely to protect the health and safety of operatives or members of the public at all times
To learn how to ensure that materials and plant are controlled and provided to ensure operational efficiency
To attend training as provided through the Modern Apprenticeship and to maintain a good level of achievement in accordance with the course outlined
Participate in toolbox talks and work place inspections
To assist in ensuring the Council’s shared behaviour’s and objectives are met
To develop an understanding and ensure that the post holder meets the Council’s statutory duties or policy commitments in relation to equalities and diversity
The ability to work to job schedules
To achieve knowledge of within specific trade
Effective communication skills – be creative, flexible and show initiative
Good customer relation skills
Knowledge of construction techniques and practices for all activities fitting with the
