• Developing the skills and knowledge to carry out highway maintenance activities and operations.
• SVQ Level 2 in Highway Maintenance (SCQF Level 5)
• Work towards Roads and Street Work Card
• A range of Modern Apprentice Challenges to further develop your skills
• Any necessary core skills
• £6.15 per hour x 37 hours per week. Shift pattern will be Monday to Thursday 08:00 – 16:00 and Friday 08:00 to 15:30

You will need:
• To be able to take instruction and direction
• To work as part of a team and complete tasks to a required standard with general supervision
• Trustworthy
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrate and interested in working in a roads/construction environment

This programme is part of the council’s youth employability initiative. We are committed to offering career development opportunities for young people within South Ayrshire and to comply with the conditions of funding from Skills Development Scotland, applicants on the start date of 1 July 2019 must be aged 18 - 19 years of age or 18 - 29 years of age if care experienced and/or have additional support needs.

The closing date for this post is Sunday 2 June and the assessment centre will take place on 18 June 2019 with a start date of 1 July 2019.

What will I learn?

To apply and adhere to all council policies and procedures.
To understand and apply the relevant processes and procedures for the post.
Ensure adherence to relevant legislation, external policy and safe practices.
To be aware of and apply relevant customer service standards.
Ensure information and advice is communicated in a clear, concise and accurate manner through written and verbal communication.
Carry out instruction, as part of a team, in the safe use of plant and materials used in roads and footway construction and repair, to allow work to be carried out safely and efficiently.
To produce accurate work and meet targets in accordance with set timescales.
To develop new skills and gain knowledge and experience through the training programme
Attend all training and development activities as required, and complete all necessary studies to achieve a Scottish Vocational Qualification.
Undertake workmanship and operative training in all aspects of highway maintenance activities and operations.
Develop skills and knowledge in carrying out highway maintenance activities and operations, including exacting using power tools and pneumatic breakers, laying bituminous materials including raking, laying slabs and kerbing.
Ensure safe working practices in which the health, safety and welfare of colleagues are not compromised.
Ensure safe use and operation, including the routine cleaning and maintenance, of a range of Highway Maintenance tools, equipment and machinery, once trained and under supervision, ensuring that all relevant risk assessments and safe systems of work are adhered to in accordance with Manufacturer’s instructions and as instructed.
Undertake routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment used in day-to-day operations and report safety issues, defects and/or wear and tear of equipment to the Foreperson.
To ensure a high standard of service delivery at all times.
Contribute to a positive and inclusive working environment within which regular performance review takes place and to undertake further training as appropriate.
To carry out such other duties consistent with the post as may be required by your Employability and Skills Officer/Supervisor.

What qualification or qualities are required?

Possession of (desirable):
Three National Level 4 qualifications or above, one being in a technical / craft subject

Substantiated ability to:
Complete an SVQ level 2
Able to take instructions and direction
Able to work as part of a team and complete tasks to the required standard with general levels of supervision
Prioritise your workload and meet deadlines.

Demonstrable experience of:
Worked as part of a team
Good written and verbal communication skills
Accuracy with a strong attention to detail
Organised and reliable with a strong sense of commitment
Good customer service awareness
Provided quality workmanship and performance in construction production or design activity

Proven technical understanding of:
Awareness of the range of duties associated with Roadworker role
