About our Graduate Apprenticeship Programme
Our Graduate Apprenticeships are great for young people who want to learn while earning at the same time. From your first day you will be an integral part of the team you join, solving problems, taking responsibility and making decisions.
During your apprenticeship you’ll study to achieve your BEng (Hons) Cyber Security. What’s more, your learning will be complemented by on the job training on real work and projects, to allow you to develop your career from day one.
About the role
The Graduate Apprenticeship in Cyber Security offers an exciting opportunity to work within the EIS Cyber Security team contributing to protecting EIS information and systems. Reporting into the Information Assurance Manager, you will be mentored and supported to form part of the in-house Cyber security team, working to deliver incident investigation, project assurance and to provide advice and support to the internal EIS teams and our partners.
The Graduate Apprentice will gain a wider understanding of cyber risk and industry best practice by working closely with the experienced Cyber Analysts.
What you’ll learn
If successful you’ll be enrolled at Napier University, working towards your BEng (Hons) Cyber Security Graduate Apprenticeship.
The Apprenticeship is delivered over a full calendar year on a day release basis. In years 1 and 2 you’ll attend classes one day per week and in years 3 and 4 you’ll attend classes one day per month.
Key Areas of Responsibility
In your first year you’ll build your knowledge and understanding of SDS and the various roles within the Cyber Security team and the wider EIS Directorate.
The work you do will be aligned to the modules you’ll be studying at Napier University, which will include:
· Information Systems in Organisations
· Software Development 1
· Practical Networks
· Introduction to Human Computer Interaction
· Computer Systems
· Professional Practice 1: Work-Based Project
Coupled with this you will have key responsibilities on the job. Please refer to the attached Job Description for full details. Future years accountabilities will be agreed annually and will be aligned to university course work.
You’ll have a head start in this vacancy if you’ve completed a Foundation Apprenticeship in a related field. We’ll need you to provide evidence of your qualification and show you gained the relevant skills from your placement
What you’ll need
To enter this GA programme at the start of Year 1 you must have either:
· A minimum of four SQA Highers at Grade BBBB (or equivalent) including Computing and Maths
· A Foundation Apprenticeship in IT: Software Development at SCQF Level 6 plus Highers BB in any other subject
· A Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6-7 in an ICT/Digital related discipline
Entry into Year 2 may be possible if you have either:
· A Modern Apprenticeship in an ICT/Digital related discipline at SCQF Level 8
· An HND at Grade B in a Computing related discipline
· Advanced Highers at Grade BB including Computing
In addition, you’ll have the following skills and attributes:
· Interest in computing
· Basic understanding of Cyber Security
· Be able to absorb new technical information as required
· Willingness to learn and develop and contribute to team workload
· Ideally, experience in risk
We need individuals who understand the importance of our organisation and who are ready to commit to helping us develop our products and services, as well as committing to a 4-year degree programme.
Recognition of prior learning (Edinburgh Napier University criteria)
If you do not hold any of the above qualifications or awards but have relevant work experience, you may be able to enter this programme at first year. Your application will be considered on an individual basis, taking into consideration your previous study and experience. You will be asked to reflect on your previous experience and demonstrate skills, knowledge and understanding equivalent to that achieved on successful completion of the above entry requirements. We will provide you with support in your reflective process through interviews and guidance on presenting your evidence.
English language requirements (Edinburgh Napier University criteria)
As all learning, teaching and assessment activities are conducted in English, if your first language is not English you must have a minimum International English Language Testing System score of 6.0 with all four elements having a score of at least 5.5.

Our normal process would involve a face to face interview and group exercise, however the current situation with regards COVID-19 means that this may not be possible if social distancing measures remain in place. In this event we will utilise online recruitment tools such as aptitude testing and video interviews. Again, we will support you to ensure you have everything you need to take part in the process.
