Leonardo’s four year Design Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship scheme in Edinburgh is looking for people who understand the importance of communication, who are able to work well as part of a team and also on their own initiative. You will have the drive and commitment to work through difficult problems to find the right engineering solutions.
You will study at the University of Strathclyde for completion of a BEng (Hons) in Engineering: Design & Manufacture through a mixture of work based learning, distance learning and day release at University. On completion you should have met the requirements for Incorporated Engineer as part of the way to gaining Chartered Engineer status.
We need people who understand the importance of our customers and are ready to commit to working in the business, whilst also committing to a 4 year degree programme. At the end of the programme, you will work as a highly qualified member of our Engineering community in a discipline such as electronics, mechanical, test, support and systems engineering.
In Edinburgh, Leonardo Radar and Advance Targeting Business Unit, we have a need for our Engineers to support our next generation of Ultra High Performance Radar Systems, Laser and Electro-optical Systems and Inertial Navigation Systems. You will be working within Integrated Project Teams to provide a Customer orientated focus on the design characteristics and performance. We are a close- knit, skilled team working at the cutting edge of engineering for Aerospace and Defence and you will have the opportunity to get involved in new and world leading development activities.
Your developing engineering and analysis skills will be used across the full equipment lifecycle: from concept and requirements analysis; through design; development; production; test; delivery to the customer; in service support solutions and finally disposal.
Our products cover a variety of technologies including optical, mechanical, low power and high power electronics, digital and analogue control and processing and RF transmission.
You will learn and develop your understanding of the key elements of support processes and Customer operational needs to help develop support solutions using state-of-the-art modelling, simulation tools and test environments.
You will work closely with Systems, Mechanical, Laser, RF, Electronics and Software engineers to identify and avoid real support related problems on complex systems, before they reach the Customers environment.
You will also have the opportunity to be involved in investigation and assessing reliability, maintainability, testability and support solution methodologies to enhance and improve the future capabilities of engineering within Leonardo.
During the first two years of your employment, you will be required to spend up to one day a month at University. You will:
• Learn how to design, manufacture and support advanced avionic equipment
• Develop Engineering knowledge, skills and behaviours
• Practice the full engineering lifecycle

Note: This Apprenticeship assumes the candidate has little professional engineering experience and is NOT suitable for candidates who already have an engineering degree.

You must have (as a minimum) the following qualifications:
• 4 Higher Grades (or equivalent): BBBB
• Mandatory: Mathematics
• Mandatory: Physics or a Technology subject
• Preferred: English and another STEM subject
• Standard Grades (1-3) / National 5: (A-C) in English (or equivalent qualifications to Highers / Standard Grades).
• You will have an inquisitive mind, wanting to know how things work, are able to be disassembled and re-built
• You will have a general interest in engineering through your own activities and hobbies
• You will be self-motivated and willing to work in isolation or as part of a diverse cross skilled team
• You will able to learn from both practical and theoretical activities
