Job overview

We have a number of opportunities this year within Renewables and Distribution;

SSE Renewables is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy, with growth ambitions to treble our renewable energy output by 2030. We drive new growth by identifying, developing, building and operating high quality assets across the UK, Ireland and internationally. With the largest offshore wind development pipeline at over 6GW in the UK and Ireland, an onshore wind pipeline across both markets in excess of 1GW and a 1,459MW hydro portfolio, we have strong opportunities for the future.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution is responsible for ensuring a safe and reliable supply of electricity to 3.8 million customers in communities across its network. SSEN Distribution employs more than 3,500 people, including skilled engineers, customer service teams and future energy experts many of whom live as well as work in the communities they serve. By enabling a smarter, more resilient electricity network they're ensuring local communities from the Shetland Islands to the Isle of Wight, and Portsmouth to Aberdeen continue to receive the power they need, both now and in the future.

What will I learn?

We have opportunities for you to join us as a Jointer, Fitter, Linesperson, Mechanical Fitter or in a multi-craft role within Distribution and within Renewables have opportunities for a multi-craft pathway (electrical and mechanical maintenance). All these roles offer you the chance to become a qualified tradesperson in your chosen field.

The programme can take 3 to 4 years to complete and is centred on work based learning and training linked directly to the job.

By the end of the programme you’ll have gained valuable on-the job experience, new skills and an industry recognised accreditation, that will offer you the opportunity to build a rewarding and successful career in the energy sector. Salary upon finishing the apprenticeship programme circa £26,500.

You will be supported by a our Apprentice Programme Manager, a dedicated mentor, your SSE colleagues who you'll work with during your on the job training and also by the support you will receive from your college tutors.

The majority of our apprentices attend college on a block release arrangement for several weeks at any one time; this will mean you may have to live away from home for short periods of time but we will support you fully during this time.

What qualification or qualities are required?

We’re looking to recruit the best future talent for our sector – and we know that it’s not all about qualifications. We’re more interested in your innate strengths and the qualities you can bring to SSE.

To be considered for this role, we would love you to:

Be able to demonstrate an ability to use your initiative, be resilient to the continual changes within our sector and always focussed on delivering great results.

You’ll have a thirst for knowledge and be able to pick up new skills quickly, working with others to achieve common goals and adjusting your behaviour to reflect the diversity of our workforce and customer base.

Naturally, you’ll have a focus on safety and will adhere to our company motto “if it’s not safe, we don’t do it.”
