Job overview

Design, install, repair and maintain refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in industrial and commercial buildings. Develop specialist skills in using copper, plastic and steel and have an understanding of electrics. Work is carried out in a wide range of premises such as factories, schools, offices, food warehouses, supermarkets, ice rinks etc

What will I learn?

To become a fully trained, qualified Refrigeration and air conditioning engineer normally takes 3 years to SVQ Level 3. You can specialise in either Refrigeration or Air Conditioning depending on the company you are employed with. You will be trained by your employer and at an appropriate college. Potential engineers will need a wide range of knowledge and must develop specialist skills as well as having an understanding of electrics.

What qualification or qualities are required?

You’ll have a head start in this vacancy if you’ve completed a Foundation Apprenticeship in a related field. We’ll need you to provide evidence of your qualification and show you gained the relevant skills from your placement

You will be working towards an SVQ Level 3 in Install, Commission and Maintain Air Conditioning Systems or Install, Commission and Maintain Refrigeration Systems. You need to have an interest in mechanical, electrical and practical work and enjoy problem solving. You should have good communication and organisation skills and a methodical approach, which will help in reading diagrams and specifications. The work is often physically demanding.
