Civil Engineering: Higher Apprenticeship at SCQF level 8

With a Higher Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering, you could be part of the industry that shapes the built environment around you. We've worked with employers, college and universities in the  industry to create this qualification. This means you'll be gaining the skills, knowledge and understanding that the industry expects from a graduate.

What will I learn?

An apprenticeship is about much more than just getting a qualification. Because it’s work-based, you’ll also gain a whole range of useful experience and skills such as:

  • Critically analysing and describing engineering theories and principles; applying these to problems in the context of civil engineering
  • Using a range of approaches to select appropriate techniques, procedures and methods to undertake tasks
  • Carrying out routine lines of enquiry using appropriate scientific, technical or engineering principles in design and practical applications
  • Undertaking critical analysis of emerging technologies and their application to civil engineering problems
  • Identifying, organising and supervising resources effectively to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact within a defined area of work
  • An in depth knowledge of the main areas pertinent to your role in relation to:
    • Health, safety and environmental legislation in construction
    • Sustainability in context of construction
    • Quality in construction
    • Design of projects and agreeing standards

Where could it take me?

You could work as a:

  • Civil engineering technician
  • Construction supervisor

You would have the potential to progress to specific supervisory or site management roles, or to specialise in particular areas of the job, like construction design or estimating.

Alternatively, you could decide to go on to do a Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering at SCQF level 10.

Course content

There are five key content areas which make up the Civil Engineering: Higher Apprenticeship at SCQF level 8:

  • Civil engineering technology and materials (25%)
  • Civil engineering design and specification (25%)
  • Technical and practical application of engineering (25%)
  • Project and delivery management (15%)
  • Interpersonal skills, communication and CPD (10%)
