  • auto electrical technician
  • roadside assistance engineer
  • parts distribution operative

The qualification

SCQF level 4

Young people are assessed throughout their Automotive apprenticeship. At the end, they achieve a Foundation Apprenticeship (Group Award) in Automotive at SCQF Level 4. This includes:

  • Skills for Work Award in Automotive, SCQF Level 4
  • Work Based Challenge Unit, SCQF Level 4

The Skills for Work award will cover:

  • the car
  • the garage
  • the technician
  • vehicle modification
Entry requirements

It's expected that pupils will have an interest in the sector. They don't need formal qualifications for entry.

The pupil would select a Foundation Apprenticeship as a school subject choice. Then they'd go through a recruitment process arranged by the college, or other learning provider. It's great if you can get involved, too.

Progression and development

Pupils develop skills to move from a Foundation Apprenticeship to a Modern Apprenticeship. They may decide to continue their education in school or at college.

If you're looking to hire, Foundation Apprenticeships help you spot talented pupils. You can assess their skills on a longer term than a regular interview process would allow.

Your role

As an employer, you can decide what level of involvement you have in the apprenticeship. You can discuss this with the college or local authority you’re working with.

There’s no financial cost to you as an employer because the learner is still at school. But investing your time can bring rewards, with access to talented young people in your workplace.

The project

Pupils from S3 to S6 can choose a Foundation Apprenticeship as one of their school subjects.

During the apprenticeship pupils work together on a project to meet a brief from a real client. Employers, supported by learning professionals, will provide a series of planned interventions. These will support:

  • design, delivery and evaluation of the project
  • the learner’s understanding of the industry and the job roles in the sector
