Description

This Foundation Apprenticeship gives pupils an introduction to the skills that will help them move into a career in construction.

The qualification

SCQF level 4 and 5

Young people are assessed throughout their FA Construction. At the end, they achieve a Foundation Apprenticeship (Group Award) in Construction (SCQF Level 4 or Level 5), which includes:

  • National Progression Award in Construction (SCQF Level 4 or 5)
  • Work-Based Challenge Unit (SCQF Level 4 or 5)

The National Progression Award will cover a variety of units and may include:

  • built environment
  • 3D modelling
  • carpentry and bench joinery
  • painting and decorating
Entry requirements

Potential apprentices choose a Foundation Apprenticeship as part of their subject choices at school. Pupils will then go through a recruitment process arranged by the college or other learning provider. We encourage you to get involved in this.

Pupils should have an interest in the sector. They don't need formal qualifications for entry.

Progression and development

Pupils will get the skills to move from a Foundation Apprenticeship to a Modern Apprenticeship. They may decide to continue their education in school or at college.

Looking to hire? The Foundation Apprenticeship helps you spot talented pupils and assess their skills. You can do this on a longer term than a regular interview process allows.

Your role

As an employer, you can decide what level of involvement you have in the apprenticeship. You can discuss this with the college or local authority you’re working with.

There’s no financial cost to you as an employer because the learner is still at school. However, the investment of your time great or small can bring you lasting rewards with access to talented and driven young people for your workplace.

The project

Pupils from S3 to S6 can choose a Foundation Apprenticeship as one of their school subjects.

During the apprenticeship pupils will work together on a project to meet a brief provided by a real-life client. Employers will be supported by learning professionals to provide a series of planned interventions that will support:

  • Design, delivery and evaluation of the project
  • Learner’s understanding of an industry and the job roles within the sector.
