What will I learn?

A GA is about much more than just getting a degree. Because it’s work-based, you’ll also gain a whole range of useful experience and skills such as:

  • Understanding an organisation’s enterprise data strategy and why it's important
  • Sourcing, collecting and integrating data
  • Having an awareness of techniques such as machine learning, data mining, prescriptive and predictive analytics (trends and patterns) and forecasting
  • Understanding the different types of quantitative research methods and statistical techniques for analysing data such as hypothesis testing, standard deviation, regression and correlation
  • Understanding the principles and advantages of machine learning and applying learning algorithms to data
  • Understanding the different specialist data analytical tools and how they can be used to support decision making
  • Demonstrating how data science can be applied to improve an organisation’s processes, operations and outputs
  • Demonstrating the different ways of communicating meaning from data
  • Understanding how data science operates within the context of data governance and data security
  • Understanding a range of contemporary project management methods and their differences

Entry requirements

Entry requirements will vary by course and institution. Vacancy advertisements provide specific information on the qualifications required by the delivery institution for each GA. Alternatively, you can contact a university or college directly for guidance on entry requirements.

Duration

A GA at SCQF level 10 (honours degree level) will take up to four years to complete. A GA at SCQF level 8 or 9 (high apprenticeship) and SCQF level 11 (professional body qualification) will take up to two years to complete.

Some individuals may complete the GA in a shorter period of time because the format means they can attend university or college outwith traditional term times.
