Courts and tribunals are a central part of the Scottish Justice system and provide administrative support to Scottish Courts and Tribunals and to the judiciary of those courts, including the High Court of Justiciary, Court of Session, Sheriff Courts, Justice of the Peace Courts and to the Office of the Public Guardian and Accountant of Court. Apprentices will gain a wide range of technical and/ or administrative skills within Courts, Tribunals and supporting services.

What's the qualification?

There are two different levels available:   

SCQF Level 5

You’ll gain an SVQ in Court and Tribunal Operations at SCQF Level 5.

SCQF Level 6  

You’ll gain an SVQ in Court and Tribunal Operations at SCQF Level 6.

What will I learn?

As part of this apprenticeship, you will achieve 5 different Work Place Core Skills at SCQF Level 5.

In addition to your qualification, you will complete at least one of the following customised awards.

Court Operations roles: Summary Criminal, Ordinary Civil, Solemn Criminal, Summary Cause (including small claims) or Commissary.

Tribunal Operations roles: Promote Continuous Improvement  

Where could it take me?

There are a range of options to peruse upon completion of this apprenticeship.

Further study: Completion could lead to a suitable degree course, subject to college/ university approval. You will also have the opportunity to pursue qualifications in a cross-sector areas such as Management, at SCQF Level 7. 

Straight to work: Use your qualifications and find a job in the sector. Examples of eligible job roles include Civil Executive Officer, Crime Executive officer, Operational Support Manager and Business Support Manager.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this framework. Achievement of academic qualifications such as Standard Grades and Highers is one way of assessing the suitability of applicants. However, each candidate will be reviewed on their own merit and employers should also be aware of newer vocational qualifications or vocational activity undertaken out with an academic institution, such as volunteering activity.


This Modern Apprenticeship will take between 12-24 months to complete.
