Description

This Modern Apprenticeship is suitable for employees who work in an engineering capacity across a wide range of industry sectors. It supports new entrants and for experienced workers who wish to upgrade their skills.

There are three pathways, so that as an employer you can choose the units that are most appropriate for the job at hand: Craft — where the employer needs fully skilled practical employees; Technician — a blend between craft activities and professional, degree-level engineering skills; Accelerated — for employees with experience of working in an engineering environment

The qualification

SCQF level 6

At the foundation phase, your employee will complete an SCQF level 5 qualification in Performing Engineering Operations. They’ll also select an SCQF level 6 qualification that’s relevant to their role. These include:

  • Electrical and mechanical manufacture
  • Maintenance and technical support
  • Fabrication and welding
  • Installation and commissioning
  • Aeronautical
  • Automotive and marine
  • Business improvement techniques
Entry requirements

Candidates for this Modern Apprenticeship don’t need any prior experience or qualification. Adult apprentices with experience may not have to complete the foundation qualification if there is evidence of sufficient skill, knowledge and competence at this level.

Progression and development

Once they complete their apprenticeship, there are a number of routes open to employees to achieve higher qualifications. These might include:

  • Full-time study at college or university level
  • A technical or professional apprenticeship at a higher level
  • An apprenticeship at the same level in an engineering specialism

How is it funded?

We contribute towards training costs

We do this by paying the learning provider directly in incremental payments throughout the course of the apprenticeship.

See training contribution calculator below to determine funding contribution for this framework.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees who are aged 16 – 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Speak to a range of learning providers to find the best deal and agree on a flexible approach to meet the needs of your business.

Who pays the apprentice?

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we do encourage all employers to pay the living wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
