Description
This Modern Apprenticeship is designed to provide a long, varied career for new entrants in the maritime sector. There are five pathways available meaning apprentices can progress in their role while gaining skills relevant to other areas in the sector.
The qualification
SCQF level 5
Your employee will study for a qualification in one of the following:
- Maritime Studies: Deck Rating at SCQF Level 5
- Maritime Studies: Able Seafarer (Deck) at SCQF Level 5
- Diploma in Maritime Studies: Able Seafarer (Engine Room)
- Diploma in Maritime Studies: Workboats
- Diploma in Maritime Studies: Sea Fishing at SCQF level 5
- Port Operations at SCQF level 5
Entry requirements
Candidates who intend to do the sea fishing qualification must have completed an industry-approved ‘Introduction to commercial fishing course’.
Progression and development
This Modern Apprenticeship can provide the first step towards a long-term career in the maritime sector, encouraging apprentices to stay and progress in their chosen field. Depending on the pathway chosen, it can lead to recognition as an Able Seafarer, promotion to officer or progression to a supervisory or management position.
How is it funded?
We contribute towards training costs
We do this by paying the learning provider directly in incremental payments throughout the course of the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees who are aged 16 – 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?
Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we do encourage all employers to pay the living wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
Time to complete
It will take between 12-24 months to complete.
