This apprenticeship is designed to support the development of apprentices working in project management, in roles such as:

  • project support officer
  • project coordinator
  • project controller
  • project scheduler
  • project management analyst
  • junior project manager

Apprentices will develop experience and apply project management knowledge and skills. They will become able to lead projects with limited complexity, or assist on complex projects.

The qualification

SCQF level 8

Your employee will study for the Diploma in Project Management at SCQF Level 8 and the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) at SCQF Level 7.

Entry requirements

For entry into a Technical Apprenticeship in Project Management, we recommend that:

  • the minimum age for entry to this apprenticeship is 16 years
  • apprentices should hold a minimum of 2 Highers (one of which should be English at grade C or above) and National 5 Maths – or the equivalent qualifications at SCQF levels 5 and 6

However, employers can also consider existing workplace skills and experience, where apprentices are changing careers or upskilling. Being open to alternative assessment methods and relevant experience, instead of qualifications, can help to broaden the pool of potential applicants.

Progression and development

A successfully completed Project Management Technical at SCQF level 8, including the achievement of competence-based and professional qualifications, opens the door to opportunities for progression in work and further learning. These include progressing to more senior project management roles in a variety of sectors and industries, such as finance, law, engineering and IT.

Further study

For those wishing to continue with further study, the following options are available:

  • APM Project Professional Qualification (PPQ) at SCQF Level 9
  • Graduate Apprenticeships in Business Management or IT: Management for Business
  • Full-time degree

Professional registration

This apprenticeship supports professional recognition as it includes learning and skills outcomes that are common to the professional qualifications relevant for project management roles across a variety of sectors.

The apprentice, employer and learning provider will determine the most appropriate professional pathway. The learning provider will guide each successful apprentice on the professional registration process they should follow.

Important information

Please read the Occupation Profile for Project Management at SCQF level 8. This gives a detailed description of the work situations routinely carried out in project management roles at this level.

This apprenticeship framework is an updated version of a previous framework, called Project Management Technical Apprenticeship, which will close for applications in March 2022.

How is it funded?

We contribute towards training costs

We do this by paying the learning provider directly in incremental payments throughout the course of the apprenticeship.

Use our Modern Apprenticeship Contribution Table to work out the funding level for this framework.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees who are aged 16 – 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Speak to a range of learning providers to find the best deal and agree on a flexible approach to meet the needs of your business.

Who pays the apprentice?

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we do encourage all employers to pay the living wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.

Time to complete

We expect this apprenticeship to last for around 24 months.
