This apprenticeship supports entry-level project management roles across many different areas of work. These include IT, construction and engineering, finance, hospitality and tourism and the public sector.

The goal of this apprenticeship is to enable you to develop experience and apply project management knowledge and skills. You will become able to lead projects with a limited complexity, or assist on complex projects.

What's the qualification?

You'll gain a Diploma in Project Management at SCQF Level 8 and an APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) at SCQF Level 7.

What will I learn?

You'll be expected to achieve some learning outcomes by the end of your apprenticeship. These include:

  • understand your work environment
  • help to develop a business case
  • support processes about procurement (buying), contracts and quality-management
  • plan projects, including budgets
  • manage project risks  
  • prepare project documents and reports
  • communicate effectively 
  • organise and manage meetings
  • lead and support teams
  • develop good practice, including ethics and professionalism
  • develop meta-skills through reflection, coaching, feedback and personal development

Important information

This apprenticeship framework is an updated version of a previous framework, called Project Management Technical Apprenticeship, which will close for applications in March 2022. 


Where could it take me?

When you complete this apprenticeship at SCQF level 8, it includes the achievement of competence-based and professional qualifications. This opens the door to many opportunities for progression in work and further learning. 

This apprenticeship supports you to develop meta-skills. These help to support high performance, resilience, self-awareness and continuous learning.

Straight to a job

Successful apprentices may progress to more senior project management roles in a variety of sectors and industries, ranging from finance and law to engineering and IT.

Further education 

If you would like to continue with further study, the following options are available: 

  • APM Project Professional Qualification (PPQ) at SCQF Level 9
  • Graduate Apprenticeships in Business Management or IT: Management for Business
  • Full-time degree 

Professional registration

This apprenticeship supports professional recognition. That's because it includes learning and skills outcomes from the professional qualifications that are relevant for project management roles. 

Together with your employer and learning provider, you'll work out the professional pathway that's right for you. Your learning provider will guide you on the professional registration process to follow. 


Entry requirements

For entry into a Technical Apprenticeship in Project Management, we recommend that: 

  • your minimum age for entry to this apprenticeship is 16 years  
  • you should hold a minimum of 2 Highers (one of which should be English at grade C or above) and National 5 Maths – or the equivalent qualifications at SCQF levels 5 and 6

However, an employer can also consider existing workplace skills and experience, for example if you're changing careers or upskilling. That way employers can help to open up the opportunities to more potential applicants. 

Duration

We expect this apprenticeship to last for around 24 months.
