This is your chance to be part of the first nuclear-specific Scottish Modern Apprenticeship.

Radiation protection monitors are fundamental to the nuclear sector, conducting day-to-day checks and monitoring to ensure compliance with radiation protection legislation and organisational policies in areas such as power generation, decommissioning and defence.

You'll be responsible for monitoring personnel, surface and airborne contamination levels and dose rates, recording levels detected and responding accordingly. You'll be part of your organisation's emergency response arrangements.

What's the qualification?

You will gain a Modern Apprenticeship qualification at SCQF level 5 in Radiation Protection Monitoring.

This course consists of:

  • Specialised vocational units for the nuclear industry alongside transferable core skills training
  • Enhancement modules providing additional industry-specific qualifications
  • Real-world industry experience in the form of a range of work experience

What will I learn?

Common features of the training will include:

  • Radiation physics, biological effects, dose limits and assessment
  • Detection and measurement of radiation and the equipment to be used
  • Designation of controlled areas within the site and workplace
  • Management of radiation source materials
  • Principles of managing risks to be as low as reasonably practicable
  • Nuclear safety culture, health and safety training and required behaviours
  • Emergency training relevant to your particular workplace

You will also develop the following core skills:

  • Communication
  • Working with others
  • Problem solving
  • Information and communication technology
  • Numeracy

These transferrable skills are useful for working in other jobs and other sectors.


Where could it take me?

You have a range of options to explore with this Modern Apprenticeship. You could continue to study in a relevant field or you could go into full-time work  

Further education: You could carry on your studies by applying for an HNC or HND in a related discipline such as Chemistry or Science. Alternatively, you could go on to study for qualifications in a related area such as Health & Safety, Training & Development or Supervisory Management.

Straight to work: Successful completion of this Modern Apprenticeship could lead to one of the following job roles:

  • Health Physics Monitor
  • Radiation Protection Team Leader
  • Radiation Protection Adviser
  • Health Physicist

Some of these roles will be longer term and will require further training and qualifications.

There are no set requirements for this apprenticeship. You should however have a safety-orientated attitude.

This Modern Apprenticeship will typically take 2 years to complete.
