This apprenticeship will help you develop your artistic abilities with specialist craft skills such as etching. What's the qualification?

You will earn a Modern Apprenticeship qualification at either SCQF level 5 or 6 in Signmaking. This qualification includes the following: 

  • Practical SVQ units combined with core skills training 
  • Hands-on industry experience in a professional working environment

What will I learn?

During your apprenticeship, you'll learn how to:   

  • Develop design skills including etching, engraving and spray painting 
  • Assemble and maintain signs using shaping, joining and forming skills 
  • Use ICT software to produce sign graphics and images 
  • Conduct site surveys to assess suitability for a sign installation 
  • Install sign products safely and effectively  

You will also develop the following core skills:  

  • Communication 
  • Teamwork 
  • Information and communication technology skills 
  • Numeracy 
  • Problem-solving  

These core skills are highly transferable and can support careers in a wide range of job sectors including engineering, trade skills, art and design and ICT. 

Where could it take me?

There are a variety of career progression options to graduates of the Modern Apprenticeship in Signmaking. You can either undertake further study or begin applying for jobs as soon as the course has been completed. 

Further education: Improve your skills further with higher-level study options. Relevant qualifications that you can apply for after completion of this Modern Apprenticeship include Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas in Fabrication and Welding, Graphics, Design and other related subjects.

Entry requirements

There are no qualification requirements to enter this course. You can increase the likelihood of a successful application by including examples of relevant work experience or references from former employers. 


This Modern Apprenticeship will take a minimum of 12 months at SCQF 5 and a minimum of 24 months at SCQF 6 to complete.
