What's the qualification?

You will earn a Modern Apprenticeship qualification in The Water Industry at either SCQF level 5 or level 6. This qualification contains: 

  • Transferable core job skills combined with vocational units specialising in key industry topics 
  • A work placement opportunity delivering real-world experience in a professional industry environment

What will I learn?

During your apprenticeship, you could learn how to:   

  • Budget and plan construction operations 
  • Excavate and locate water systems 
  • Carry out step-testing to locate water leaks 
  • Install new water network elements 
  • Maintain water processing equipment 
  • Understand and comply with government water regulations 
  • Ensure that construction work is completed safely 

You will also develop a number of valuable core skills:

These skills are beneficial across almost every Scottish employment sector. Examples of sectors related to the water industry that require core skills training include manufacturingretail, engineering and energy.

Further education: Continue your development with additional training. Examples of courses that you could progress onto include the Higher National Certificate in Water Operations at SCQF level 7.

Entry requirements

There are no set entry requirements for this apprenticeship. You should be willing to demonstrate your enthusiasm and motivation for a career in the water industry and ideally should have some practical experience using basic tools. 


This Modern Apprenticeship will take 24 months to complete at SCQF level 5 and 48 months to complete at SCQF level 6.
