Foundation Apprenticeships at SCQF Levels 4 and 5

Work-based learning experience at SCQF Levels 4 and 5 builds on the current success of Foundation Apprenticeships, which are available nationwide as subjects at SCQF Level 6. To find out more about SCQF Levels, you can view the framework on the SCQF website.

How it works

A Level 4/5 Foundation Apprenticeship is picked as a subject choice at S3 and up to S6. The three subjects are Construction, Hospitality or Automotive.

A pupil will be set a project by an employer and get support from experts to develop, deliver and complete it throughout the school year.  The project will then be assessed by a learning provider, such as a college.

In 2020, more pupils will have the chance to benefit from work-based learning at SCQF Levels 4 and 5. The pilot is being offered as a subject choice in more schools across Scotland with a range of learning providers.

The benefits

SCQF Levels 4 and 5 Foundation Apprenticeships will:

  • Enable young people to engage with local employers
  • Help pupils gain work related technical and meta skills, which are identified by employers as critical to the future of the world of work. These include skills such as problem solving, communication and organisation
  • Help employers promote careers within their industry and discover their future workforce
  • Open-up opportunities of progression on to a Foundation Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6, and develop skills to support a future journey into a Modern or Graduate Apprenticeship or further education
