What's Design like?
The design apprenticeship is great for anyone who is new to design and wants to develop their knowledge. You’ll have the chance to work in a creative environment, learn to follow a design process, as well as research, test and apply design techniques.
Lots of industries in Scotland need designers and there are plenty of jobs to choose from. You could work in a digital agency as a graphic designer or as a technical illustrator. You will be able to create different types of art, such as infographics, cartoons, logos and prints. Whether you are new to the art world or have years of experience, the apprenticeship can provide a creative outlet.
You will gain a Modern Apprenticeship in Design at SCQF Level 5 and Level 7.

Your qualification includes:
SVQ in Design Support at SCQF Level 5
SVQ in Design Support at SCQF Level 7
During your apprenticeship, you'll learn how to:
Create different kinds of art in a business setting
Develop your artistic knowledge
Carry out best health and safety practices
Create lasting relationships with your colleagues
You will also develop the following core skills:
Time management
Communication
Problem-solving
Team work
These transferrable skills are useful for working in other jobs such as copywriting and illustration.
This Modern Apprenticeship gives you a range of options. Choose to study for another design qualification or find a job in the design industry.
Further education: Carry on your education by studying for an art degree. You could then go on to study an art-related MA or PHD. The knowledge you have gained can support your university application.
Straight to work: You can use your qualifications to find a design job. These include:
Graphic designer
Desktop publishing assistant
Technical illustrator
Product designer
Assistant copywriter
Junior graphic designer

How does it work?
You’ll learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. You’ll also study with a college or another learning provider.
How long will it take?
This Modern Apprenticeship will take 12 to 24 months to complete.
