What's Boat Building and Repair like?
If you have a love for the outdoors and enjoy constructing or making things, then a boat building and repair apprenticeship could be for you. You'll learn about fabrication and welding, boat carpentry and joinery, marine electrics and marine engineering all while working by Scotland's coast.
You can choose between working with metal or wood and you'll learn how to keep yourself safe in the workplace. You'll also learn career skills to help you now and in the future. These include communication, problem solving and working with others.
When you've finished this apprenticeship, you could continue your studies and study an engineering apprenticeship or go straight into a boat building and repair role.
You’ll gain an Boat Building and Repair qualification at SCQF Level 6. You'll focus on Wooden Boat Building and Repair or Composite and Metal Boat Building and Repair.

Wooden Boat Building and Repair at SCQF Level 6
Composite and Metal Boat Building and Repair at SCQF Level 6
As part of your work, you’ll learn about Boat Building and Repair and one of the following:
Engineering practice
Fabrication and Welding Engineering
Engineering Systems
Measurement and Control Engineering
Construction - Carpentry and Joinery
Marine Engineering
You’ll also develop the following core skills:
Communication
Working with others
Problem-solving
Time management
These transferable skills can be used for different roles, such as farming and ship work.
This Modern Apprenticeship provides different options. Choose to continue your studies with a relevant aquaculture degree or go into full time work.
Further education: Further your studies by working towards Engineering Construction SCQF Level 6/7 qualification or the Engineering Technical Apprenticeship SCQF Level 8.

How does it work?
You’ll learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. You’ll also study with a college or another learning provider.

It will take around 36 months to complete.
