Modern Apprenticeship
Description
Apprentices will develop and apply essential skills and knowledge in maintaining engineering assets. They'll gain skills and knowledge to fit, repair, replace, design and model assets and components.
This apprenticeship supports apprentices working in engineering and manufacturing roles such as:
maintenance engineer
instrumentation and control technician
valve technician
mechanical engineer
electrical engineer
rail engineer
electrical and mechanical fitters
agricultural engineer
installation engineer
commissioning engineer
test engineer
Apprenticeship framework(s)
Your employee will study for a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 7.
Select Level 7 to see the framework document and qualification(s) at that level.
NC/HNC in an Engineering or Engineering related discipline at SCQF Level 5 or above
and either:
EAL Diploma in Engineering at SCQF Level 7 (Asset Lifecycle and Maintenance Pathway), R807 04
or
SQA Diploma in Engineering: Engineering Asset Lifecycle and Maintenance at SCQF Level 7, GV31 47
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this apprenticeship. If apprentices are changing careers or upskilling, consider their workplace skills and experience.
It's good to be open to alternative assessment methods, and experience, instead of qualifications. This can help to broaden the pool of potential applicants.
Progression and development
When they complete the apprenticeship, the apprentice can progress in work and further learning. Successful apprenticeships include both competence-based and professional qualifications.
Career advancement
Successful apprentices may progress to technical specialist roles or supervisory/managerial roles.
Graduate Apprenticeships
They could progress to degree-level apprenticeships at SCQF Level 9 in engineering or in business-related subjects. These include:

Graduate Apprenticeship in Engineering: Instrumentation Measurement and Control

How does it work?
Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.
Cost and funding
We contribute towards training costs
We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?
Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
How long will it take?
It will take around 4 years to complete.
