This apprenticeship provides a structured career path for employees in the food and drink sector. It gives them a deeper understanding of the scientific and technical aspects of the industry and helps them take on more complex roles.

The qualification covers areas like food business, food manufacture, food safety hazards and health, safety and environmental management.

Your employee will study for a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6.

Entry requirements

There are no specific routes into the Modern Apprenticeship in Food and Drink Technical at SCQF Level 6, although previous experience gained in the industry may be beneficial.

Progression and development

Once they complete their apprenticeship, candidates could help improve productivity and increase the competitiveness of their employer. Potential roles include:

  • Food technologist

  • Product development technologist

  • Quality supervisor

  • Quality Auditor

Employees could also carry out the Food and Drink Operations Modern Apprenticeship SCQF Level 6 or progress into higher education.

How does it work?

Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.

Cost and funding

We contribute towards training costs

We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

The training contribution calculator will show you our funding contribution for this framework.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.

How long will it take?

It will take between 12 and 24 months to complete.
