There are a variety of jobs in Scotland’s hairdressing and barbering sector. Work as a junior hairdresser and style hair in a salon. Give people a comfortable shave by working as a barber. Apply your creative knowledge by working as a hairdresser that specialises in afro hairstyles.
You'll gain a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5 or Level 6.
Hairdressing at SCQF Level 5 or
Barbering at SCQF Level 5
Hairdressing at SCQF Level 6 or
Barbering at SCQF Level 6
During your apprenticeship, you'll learn how to:
Cut hair using basic barbering techniques
Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
Create basic outlines and detailing in hair
Dry and finish men’s hair
Advise and consult with clients
Cut facial hair to shape using basic barbering techniques
Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
Plait and twist hair
Temporarily attach hair to enhance a style
Fulfil salon reception duties
You will develop the following core skills:
Team work
Problem-solving
Communication
Numeracy
Time management
These transferrable skills are useful for working in other jobs such as business administration and salon management.
This Modern Apprenticeship gives you a range of options. Carry on your education with a related creative degree or go into full-time work.
Further education: Enhance your skills with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design or another creative qualification. Your experience will support your university application.
Straight to work: Use your qualifications and find a hairdressing or barbering job. After completing the apprenticeship, you could move onto jobs like:

Junior barber
TV hair stylist
Salon receptionist
African Caribbean hair stylist
Barber
Entry requirements
There are no set requirements for the apprenticeship. However, it is useful to have an interest in hairdressing and barbering.
How does it work?
You’ll learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. You’ll also study with a college or another learning provider.
How long will it take?
This Modern Apprenticeship will take 12 and 24 months to complete.
