Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
This Modern Apprenticeship is designed to provide a structured career path for employees in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) sector. It helps you build the skills and knowledge in your business so staff can progress in their role. There are a number of pathways, allowing apprentices to select the one most relevant to their work.
Your employee will study for a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6 or Level 7. Their qualification will include:
Heating and Ventilating: Industrial and Commercial Installation at SCQF Level 6
Heating and Ventilating: Ductwork, Planning and Installation at SCQF Level 6
Install, Commission and Maintain Refrigeration Systems at SCQF Level 6
Install, Commission and Maintain Air Conditioning Systems at SCQF Level 6
Service, Maintain and Commission Building Engineering Services at SCQF Level 7
There are no specific entry requirements, but applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a National 4 in:
a technical subject
For the service and maintenance apprenticeship, it's ideal if they have National 5s and/or Highers.
Progression and development
Successful apprentices should be able to carry out technical, supervisory and management positions in roles such as:
Building Services Engineering Technician
Sales Engineer/Commercial Manager
Apprentices could also choose to take up further study — such as an HNC, HND, or degree — that could lead to membership and recognition by a professional body.
How does it work?
Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.
Cost and funding
We contribute towards training costs
We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.
The training contribution calculator will show you our funding contribution for this framework.
An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.
Speak to a range of learning providers to find the best deal and agree on a flexible approach to meet your business needs.
Who pays the apprentice?
Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
How long will it take?
It will take around 3 years to complete.
