Modern Apprenticeship
Description
This Modern Apprenticeship has two levels, making it suitable for employees with no experience in the horticulture sector, as well as those who want to take a step forward in their career. There are different pathways to give employees the skills, knowledge and hands-on training they need to succeed in their chosen area of horticulture. It can prepare them for roles such as gardener, interior landscaper and skilled tractor/machine operator.

Entry requirements
SCQF Level 5
There are no set entry requirements for this Modern Apprenticeship, but candidates should be keen to learn and enjoy working outside.
SCQF Level 6
Candidates should have completed the Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5, or have equivalent qualifications or experience.
Progression and development
SCQF Level 5
Depending on the pathway they take, your employees will learn the skills they need for roles such as:
Gardener
Cemetery worker
Greenkeeper/groundsperson
Interior landscaper
Skilled horticulture worker
Skilled packer/despatch worker
Skilled tractor/machine operator
Skilled plant propagator
They could also progress to further qualifications and awards, including the horticulture Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6, and related courses in higher and further education.
SCQF Level 6
Depending on the pathway they take, your employees will learn the skills they need for roles such as:
Gardener
Interior landscape designer
Parks officer
Deputy head greenkeeper/groundskeeper
Garden designer
Senior gardener/horticulture technician
Horticulture specialist
They could also progress to related courses in higher education, such as botany, plant pathology, conservation, seed science or plant science.
How does it work?
Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.
Cost and funding
We contribute towards training costs
We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?
Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
How long will it take?
It will take around 3 years to complete.
