Modern Apprenticeship
Description
This Technical Apprenticeship allows employees who work in life sciences to focus their area of study on a selected discipline. It covers the traditional healthcare aspects of life sciences and other related science areas, such as industrial, marine, plant, environmental and veterinary biotechnology.
This apprenticeship can be a valuable step towards degree-level courses. On completion, employees will have the relevant skills and experience to work as a technical supervisor or advanced technician in industry, universities, schools, further education colleges or the NHS.

Your employee will study for a Modern Apprenticeship in Life Science and Related Science Industries Technical at SCQF Level 8.

SVQ in Laboratory Skills (Life Science) SCQF Level 8
Plus one of the following:
HND in Applied Sciences at SCQF Level 8
HND in Applied Biological Sciences at SCQF Level 8
HND in Applied Chemical Sciences at SCQF Level 8
HND in Industrial Biotechnology GK70 16 SQA at SCQF Level 8
Entry requirements
Candidates should have completed the Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF level 7, or have equivalent qualifications or experience.
Progression and development
After completing this Technical Apprenticeship, your employees will have the skills and knowledge they need for roles including technical supervisor and advanced technician.
They could also progress to further qualifications and awards and memberships, including:
A degree in chemistry, science or a related discipline
Assessor and verifier awards
Qualifications in improvement techniques and supervisory management.
Membership of a professional institution at Technician level
Cogent Gold Standard qualifications
How does it work?
Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.
Cost and funding
We contribute towards training costs
We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?
Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
How long will it take?
It will take between 12 and 24 months to complete.
