Skills for Craft Businesses

Modern Apprenticeship

This Modern Apprenticeship is the ideal training route for employees who work in contemporary, traditional or heritage crafts, as well as anyone who works in a skilled trade. It gives individuals the practical skills, work-based knowledge, and creative understanding they need to succeed in the craft industry, whether that be in a micro business or large organisation.

Apprenticeship framework(s)

Your employee will study for a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 7.

Select Level 7 to see the framework document and qualification(s) at that level.

Entry requirements

Work experience in a craft-related environment would be useful, but is not essential.

Employees who complete this Modern Apprenticeship will have the skills to take on the following kinds of role:

  • Craft maker in glass, textiles, bookbinding, ceramics, leatherwork, metalwork, basket making or other practices that involve hand-making elements

  • Assistant maker

  • Designer

Individuals who want to specialise in jewellery making can progress onto the Technical Apprenticeship in Jewellery Manufacturing, Silverware Manufacturing or Jewellery Manufacturing CAD/CAM at SCQF Level 8.

How does it work?

Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.

Cost and funding

We contribute towards training costs

We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

The training contribution calculator will show you our funding contribution for this framework.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Speak to a range of learning providers to find the best deal and agree on a flexible approach to meet your business needs.

Who pays the apprentice?

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.

How long will it take?

It will take between 12 and 24 months to complete.
