Modern Apprentice, sport and leisure

My Modern Apprenticeship has changed my life. I’m now a lot more confident and responsible in everything I do.

Murrie is turning his love of sport into a career with the help of his Modern Apprenticeship. He works with school children in East Ayrshire through Vibrant Communities (part of Active Schools), introducing them to fun sports and encouraging them to be active.

'I wanted to do the apprenticeship to become a better coach and a better teacher in sports,' he says.

Building confidence

Murrie has a learning disability and says learning through work has helped him to develop. It means he can put his skills into practice right away.

'Because of my disability and the way I learn, sometimes during the sessions I would get tongue tied,' he says. 'I would struggle with it. But the way I overcame that was through experience.

'I'd go out to as many sessions as possible. The more sessions I did, the easier it became to overcome the things I was struggling with.'

An award-winning apprentice

Murrie did so well that his employers nominated him for a Scottish Apprenticeship Award. And at the ceremony, he took home the prize for Apprentice of the Year - Level 2.

Now, he's being asked to take on more responsibilities - including setting up and running his own night football league session. He's almost finished his apprenticeship and plans to go on to study a HND.

'I'm looking forward to the future,' he says.
