My apprenticeship has given me the chance to learn and develop new skills. It’s given me the chance to think, 'Where am I strong? Where am I weak? What can I improve?'

Rachel works as a customer experience executive with VisitScotland. 'I live in the beautiful country of Scotland,' she says. 'Of course I want to help market it and make people interested in coming here.'

A good team

Rachel has autism and found out about the apprenticeship through East Lothian Works. Since starting her apprenticeship, she's found her team very supportive.

'Sometimes I may look at the world differently,' she says. 'The people that I work with take that into account and are willing to go out of their way to explain things in a way that I can understand.

'Overall I'm helping to represent myself, as somebody with autism, being able to prove to my employer that I'm capable of working. It's just that I need additional support, clear instructions and a clear outcome as to what's being expected.'

A confidence boost

'Even my parents have noticed a huge increase in my confidence, with regards to being independent. They're incredibly proud about what I've managed to achieve here.'
