This Modern Apprenticeship is offered at two levels. This helps you train employees as new entrants, but also provides a way for people already in the role to upgrade their skills. There's a choice of three pathways, offering real scope for employee progression.

Qualifications

SCQF level 5

Your employee will study for one of the following qualifications at SQCF level 5:

  • Rail Engineering: Electrification Construction Maintenance
  • Rail Engineering: Signalling and Telecoms
  • Permanent Way Installation and Maintenance
Entry requirements

There are no set entry requirements for this apprenticeship but candidates would benefit from having basic skills in using hand tools correctly, and should demonstrate an appreciation of safety and working regulations.

Progression and development

After finishing this apprenticeship, your employees can progress to the rail engineering apprenticeship at SCQF level 6.

They could also be eligible to enter full time/part time study at college in a related area.

SCQF level 6

Your employee will study for one of the following qualifications at SQCF level 6:

  • Rail Engineering: Electrification Construction Maintenance
  • Rail Engineering: Signalling and Telecoms
  • Permanent Way Installation and Maintenance
Entry requirements

Candidates should have completed SCQF level 5 Modern Apprenticeship, or have equivalent experience or qualifications.

Progression and development

After completing this apprenticeship, your employees will be able to progress to SCQF qualifications at a higher level, such as the engineering technical apprenticeship. They could also access other vocational and academic qualifications.

How is it funded?

We contribute towards training costs

We do this by paying the learning provider directly in incremental payments throughout the course of the apprenticeship.

Use our Modern Apprenticeship Contribution Table to work out the funding level for this framework.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees who are aged 16 – 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we do encourage all employers to pay the living wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.

Time to complete

It will take between 12-24 months to complete.
