What's a Chef Modern Apprenticeship like?
Do you want to build a career as a chef? This Chef Modern Apprenticeship can be your recipe for success. You'll build relevant skills as you work in professional kitchens and premises.
What's the qualification?
You'll gain a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5 or 6.
Your qualification includes:
SCQF Level 5
Diploma in Professional Cookery at SCQF Level 5
SCQF Level 6
Diploma in Professional Cookery at SCQF Level 6
What will I learn?
As part of this apprenticeship, you’ll learn about:
kitchen hygiene and safety
following dish specifications and instructions
techniques used to prepare, cook and present food in professional kitchens
the structure of professional kitchens and the principles of working as a professional chef
You’ll also develop the following core skills:
communication
numeracy
information and communication technology
problem solving
working with others
These transferable skills can be used for different jobs in other sectors, too.
Where could it take me?
There's a range of options after completing this Modern Apprenticeship. You could study at college or university, or continue to build your career in the industry.
Further study: Increase your knowledge through different courses. For example, you could study for a degree in Food Science.
Straight to work: Use your qualifications to find a job in the food and drink sector.
Apprenticeships
If you do a Chef Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5, you're in a great position to progress on to the Chef Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6.
After the Chef Modern Apprenticeship at Level 6, you could do a Modern Apprenticeship in Hospitality (Supervision and Leadership) at SCQF Level 7. There is also a Hospitality Management Skills Technical Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 8.
Entry requirements
There are no set entry criteria to the Chef Modern Apprenticeship at Level 5 or 6. Although, you should be passionate about food and willing to learn. You should also:
have good communication skills
show enthusiasm to work with a variety of food types
be willing to work in fast paced environments
have a positive attitude towards learning and working with others
be prepared to adhere to a flexible working pattern
How does it work?
You’ll learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. You’ll also study with a college or another learning provider.
How long will it take?
This Modern Apprenticeship will take around 12 months to complete.
