What's Fashion & Textile Manufacture and Aftercare like?

Are you ready to bring your creative clothing ideas to life? This Modern Apprenticeship will allow you to thread together an exciting career in the fashion and textiles industry.

Whether you're interested in producing hand-made kilts, crafting luxurious leather shoes or anything in between – there's a job for you in Scotland's fashion and textiles industries.

As part of this Modern Apprenticeship, you could alter made-to-measure suits as a tailor, create the next must-have leather jacket as a craftsperson or clean and restore people's much-loved garments in a textile care role.

This apprenticeship can help you build a wide range of creative skills. You'll develop your knowledge of Scotland's fashion scene and work with different materials, such as leather and tweed. You'll also have the chance to learn about professional cleaning, finishing and restoration of materials.

What's the qualification?

SCQF Level 5

You'll gain a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5.

Your qualification will include:

  • Leather, Sewn Products or Textiles Manufacturing at SCQF Level 5

  • Textile Care Services at SCQF Level 5

What will I learn?

During your apprenticeship, you'll study one of four pathways.

If you follow the Leather Manufacturing pathway, you'll learn about the production of footwear and leather goods. This'll include chemical or mechanical processes, cutting operations, recycling, product testing, selling and repairs.

The Sewn Products Manufacturing pathway will teach you about creating soft goods. Some of the things you'll learn include sewing, pressing, the seam-sealing process, producing samples and recycling.

As part of the Textile Care pathway, you'll study processes such as dry-cleaning, dry-finishing, recycling, washing, pressing and finishing, maintaining equipment and dispatching cleaned items.

The Textile Manufacturing pathway will teach you about garment production, the weaving process, dyeing, recycling and maintaining the hand loom for Harris Tweed weaving – among other things!

You'll develop the following core skills:  

  • communication

  • numeracy

  • information and communication technology

  • problem-solving

  • working with others

These transferable skills are useful for working in other roles, such as sewing and clothes manufacturing. 

Where could it take me?

This Modern Apprenticeship gives you a range of options. Continue your studies with an SCQF Level 6 or 7 Modern Apprenticeship, or find a job in the textiles industry.

Further education: Progress your studies by choosing a Modern Apprenticeship in Fashion and Textiles Heritage at SCQF Level 6 or 7 or a Modern Apprenticeship in Leadership and Management at SCQF Level 7.

Straight to work: Use your qualifications to find a job in the fashion and textiles industry. You could apply to become a:

  • technician

  • team leader

  • shift leader

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this apprenticeship, but employers may expect you to show an active interest in fashion and textiles.

How does it work?

You’ll learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. You’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.

How long will it take?

The Modern Apprenticeship will take up to 12 months to complete.
