Greenkeeping and Sportsturf

This Modern Apprenticeship is offered at two levels. It's designed to help you support the development of apprentices working across Scotland's land-based sector.

A Greenkeeping and Sportsturf Modern Apprenticeship allows you to grow your own talent from the ground up. Apprentices can tailor the framework towards your business' needs by choosing relevant outcomes from a comprehensive list.

The Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5 is aimed at employees who are looking for an entry-level role in greenkeeping or sportsturf maintenance.

Whereas, the Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6 is perfect for employees who want to specialise in a more senior position. Once they complete the apprenticeship, they're well-equipped to work as a:

• deputy head greenkeeper

• deputy head groundsperson

There are no formal entry requirements for the Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5. Although, apprentices must be employed in a suitable job to gain the experience and knowledge they need to earn the qualification. Apprentices should also:

• be prepared to attend off-the-job training

• have the ability to develop the range of skills and knowledge needed to complete the apprenticeship

• enjoy working with others

• have a positive attitude towards learning

Likewise, there are no formal entry requirements for the Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6. Some applicants may have already completed the apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5.

When recruiting apprentices at both levels, you should consider a candidate's existing workplace skills and experience, rather than just formal qualifications. This'll broaden your pool of potential applicants.

To successfully complete the apprenticeship, your employee must pass all the competence-based and professional qualifications. The apprenticeship will open the door for employees to progress at work or go on to further learning.

Successful apprentices at SCQF Level 5 may progress to:

• the Modern Apprenticeship in Greenkeeping and Sportsturf at SCQF Level 6

• an SVQ at SCQF Level 6 in Landscaping, Sportsturf, or Parks, Gardens and Green Space

• a Further or Higher Education course in Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Conservation or Seed Science

An apprentice who successfully completes SCQF Level 6 may progress to:

• senior roles, such as deputy head greenkeeper or deputy head groundsperson

• a Further or Higher Education course in Botany, Plant Pathology, Conservation Seed Science or Plant Science
