Description

This Modern Apprenticeship is offered at two levels. It's designed to help you support the development of apprentices working across Scotland's land-based sector.

A Land and Nature Modern Apprenticeship allows you to grow your own talent from the ground up. Apprentices can tailor the framework towards your business' needs by choosing relevant outcomes from a comprehensive list.

The Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5 supports junior technician and support operative/assistant roles, such as:

  • estate worker

  • ranger

  • conservation worker

  • underkeeper

  • beat keeper

  • game farm worker

  • under-stalker

  • ghillie

The Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6 supports more senior positions. On completion, apprentices are well-equipped to work in roles such as:

  • access/recreation officer

  • environmental management officer

  • estate supervisor

  • senior ranger

  • wildlife manager

  • reserve manager

Your employee will study for a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5 or 6.

SCQF qualification levels explained

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5. Although, apprentices must be employed in a suitable job to gain the experience and knowledge they need to earn the qualification. Apprentices should also:

  • be prepared to attend off-the-job training

  • have the ability to develop the range of skills and knowledge needed to complete the apprenticeship

  • enjoy working outdoors

  • have a positive attitude towards learning

Likewise, there are no formal entry requirements for the Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6. Some applicants may have already completed the apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5.

When recruiting apprentices at both levels, you should consider a candidate's existing workplace skills and experience, rather than just formal qualifications. This'll broaden your pool of potential applicants.

Progression and development

Successful apprentices at SCQF Level 5 are ready to:

  • work in a relevant support operative, assistant or junior technician role

  • progress to the Level 6 Land and Nature Modern Apprenticeship

  • study a Further or Higher Education course in areas such as conservation, estate maintenance, wildlife, ecology and environmental science

Successful apprentices at SCQF Level 6 are ready to:

  • work in relevant senior operative, supervisor and technician roles

  • study a Further or Higher Education course in areas such as environmental management, wildlife and conservation management, land management, ecology and environmental science

How does it work?

Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.

Cost and funding

We contribute towards training costs

We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.

How long will it take?

The Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5 will take employees 15 to 18 months to complete.

At SCQF Level 6, it'll take an employee between 18 months and two years to achieve the Modern Apprenticeship.
