This Modern Apprenticeship helps employees gain skills and knowledge they need for quality technician roles in science industries.
The life and chemical industries are high-tech and innovative, with a huge range of areas and jobs. Scotland is internationally recognised for work in this area, which includes:
drug discovery and development
medical technologies
cell, gene and vaccine therapy
chemical and process manufacturing
bioinformatics
We have a thriving sciences industry, with over 630 organisations in this area. These organisations contribute over £2 billion to the Scottish economy annually.
This apprenticeship is an ideal opportunity for employees to work in an exciting and developing sector.

Your employee will study for a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6.
Apprentices will achieve the following qualification:
Quality Operations in the Science Industries at SCQF Level 6
Entry requirements
There are no set entry requirements for this Modern Apprenticeship.
Progression and development
When they complete this Modern Apprenticeship, there are several options for continuing their development and progressing their career.
They could do further vocational training or academic qualifications. These may include:
Higher Certificates/Diplomas in quality, science or process manufacturing or a related discipline
developing a career in coaching through assessor and verifier awards
qualifications in a related area, including Health & Safety, Qualified Person, Training & Development and Supervisory Management
membership of a professional institution at technician level - see the Society for Radiological Protection, for example
After successfully completing their apprenticeship, they could consider applying for jobs such as:
operational quality adviser
compliance owner
quality validation specialist
laboratory systems analyst

How does it work?
Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.
Cost and funding
We contribute towards training costs
We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?
Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
How long will it take?
It will take a minimum of 36 months to complete this Modern Apprenticeship.
