A Modern Apprenticeship helped transform Mia from a shy school pupil into a successful hospitality professional.
Mia's journey
In 2019, Mia was ready to give up on her education. She had struggled at school due to dyslexia and felt that college or university wasn’t the right path for her.
Determined to find a different route, Mia took on a work placement at Auchrannie Resort to develop practical workplace skills. After leaving school, she secured a role within the housekeeping team at the Arran-based facility.
Mia’s placement was everything she hoped for. She built a strong foundation of skills and became a valuable member of the team. Mia’s colleagues encouraged her to take the next step in her career by applying for an internal Hospitality Services Modern Apprenticeship vacancy.
Mia's apprenticeship
Before starting her Modern Apprenticeship in 2023, Mia was known for completing tasks successfully. Now, she’s a proactive employee who uses her initiative and takes ownership of her work.
The 22-year-old has always been a hard worker. But since starting her Modern Apprenticeship, Mia has a stronger understanding of the impact her role can have on each guest’s experience at Auchrannie.
Crucially, Mia has now discovered a learning style that works. The housekeeper enjoys the online coursework and loves building a successful career while still living on the Isle of Arran.
Mia said, ‘When I left school, I didn’t know what my future would be. The apprenticeship has given me a better idea of what I’m able to achieve, along with more confidence.’

I’m happy in my apprenticeship and always give my best. I enjoy talking to guests – and meeting their dogs!

The future
Three years into her Modern Apprenticeship, Mia hopes to progress within Auchrannie. Having mastered the art of housekeeping, she’s keen to work across different departments within the resort.
And Mia’s already taking proactive steps to achieve this! According to her managers, the apprentice embraces every opportunity and regularly does extra training in her own time.
In 2025, Mia’s outstanding work was celebrated at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards. Brodick-based Mia was named as Scotland’s Modern Apprentice of the Year at SCQF Level 5.
Auchrannie Resort People Development Manager Amanda Pirie said, ‘Mia’s personality shines and she’s a delight to work with. She knows she can achieve whatever she sets her mind to.’
