The apprenticeship is designed to help you succeed in the engineering industry. You can learn how to create modern structures such as roads or tunnels. Youll have the chance to work with the latest engineering technology and put your ideas into practice.   

What's the qualification?

You will gain a qualification at SCQF level 6 in engineering. The qualification includes:  

  • core units of aSVQ in engineering at SCQF level 6 
  • a range of optional units

What will I learn?

As part of your apprenticeship you will complete an SCQF level 5 qualification in performance engineering operations. You can learn how to:  

  • comply with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements 
  • use and interpret engineering data and documentation 
  • work efficiently and effectively in engineering  

You will also complete an SCQF level 6 qualification in one of the following subjects:  

  • electrical and mechanical manufacture 
  • maintenance and technical support 
  • fabrication and welding 
  • installation and commissioning 
  • aeronautical 
  • automotive 
  • business improvement techniques   

You will develop the following core skills:   

  • teamwork 
  • problem-solving  
  • communication  
  • time management   

These transferrable skills are useful for working in other jobs such as civil engineering and technical engineering.   

Where could it take me?

This Modern Apprenticeship gives you many optionsCarry on your education with an engineering degree or get a job in the industry. 

Further education: Carry on your studies by applying for a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. You could also go on to study for a Masters in a related field. Your experience will support your university application.   

Straight to work: Use your qualifications and find an engineering job. These could include:  

  • civil engineer 
  • mechanical engineer 
  • automotive technician 
  • electrical technician 
  • IT technician 
  • aeronautical engineer 

Entry requirements

Although there are no set requirements for the apprenticeship, it is helpful to understand some of the basic principles of engineering and be committed to increasing your knowledge.  


This Modern Apprenticeship will take around 4 years to complete.
