The apprenticeship is geared towards anyone who wants to improve their medical knowledge. Learn how to maintain a healthy environment for patients. Use a range of medical equipment such as oxygen machines and heart rate monitors. Discover what it means to look after a variety of patients and make them feel comfortable.   

Whether youre interested in healthcare administration or a hands-on role, theres a job for you in the industry. Work as a healthcare assistant and help to make patients feel comfortable in hospital. What's the qualification?

You will gain a qualification at SCQF level 6 or in healthcare supportBoth qualifications include:  

  • Core units of aSVQ in healthcare support at SCQF level 6 or 7 
  • Work experience in an industry that is dedicated to helping people

What will I learn?

During your apprenticeship, you'll learn how to:   

  • Promote effective communication in a healthcare environment 
  • Maintain health, safety and security practices within a health setting 
  • Develop your practice through reflection  
  • Provide information on endoscopic procedures to individuals 
  • Prepare individuals for endoscopic procedures 
  • Reprocess endoscopic equipment  
  • Measure and record patient’s body fluid output 
  • Assist and support in the monitoring of patients within the perioperative environment 
  • Prepare and dress for scrubbed clinical roles   

You will develop the following core skills:   

  • Team work   
  • Numeracy 
  • Problem-solving  
  • Communication  
  • Time management    

These transferrable skills are useful for working in other jobs such as administration and mental health support.

Further education: Continue to improve your medical knowledge by studying for a healthcare bachelor’s degree. Your experience will support your university application.

Entry requirements

There are no set requirements for the apprenticeship. But it is useful to have an interest in the healthcare support field.   

Duration

This Modern Apprenticeship will take 12-24 months to complete.
