Description
This Modern Apprenticeship helps employees gain skills and knowledge they need for roles in life sciences and its related industries. It’s offered at two levels to support new entrants and the upskilling of existing teams. The apprenticeship covers the traditional healthcare aspects of life sciences, as well as related science areas such as industrial, marine, plant, environmental and veterinary biotechnology.
Qualifications
SCQF level 6
Your employee will study for a qualification at SCQF level 6 in one of:
- Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
- Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (Industrial Science)
- Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (Education Science)
- Life Sciences and Related Industries
Plus, a qualification at SCQF level 5 in one of:
- Applied Science
- Practical Science
Entry requirements
There are no set entry requirements for this Modern Apprenticeship.
Progression and development
After completing this Modern Apprenticeship, your employees will have the skills and knowledge they need for roles including:
- Laboratory attendant
- Junior laboratory assistant technician
- Junior technician
- Laboratory trainee
They could also progress to the Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF level 7 or further qualifications and recognition, including:
- HNC/HND in chemistry, science or a related discipline
- Assessor and Verifier awards
- Qualifications in business improvement techniques and supervisory management
- Cogent Gold Standard qualifications
- Membership of a professional institution at Technician level

Your employee will study for a qualification at SCQF level 7 in one of:
- Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
- Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (Industrial Science)
- Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (Education Science)
- Life Sciences and Related Industries
Plus, a qualification at SCQF level 6/7 in one of:
- Applied Sciences
- Laboratory Science
- Bioscience

Progression and development
After completing this Modern Apprenticeship, your employees will have the skills and knowledge they need for roles such as laboratory technician or professional technologist.
They could also progress to further qualifications and recognition, including:
- HNC/HND in chemistry, science or a related discipline
- Assessor and Verifier awards
- Qualifications in business improvement techniques and supervisory management
- Cogent Gold Standard qualifications
- Membership of a professional institution at Technician level
How is it funded?
We contribute towards training costs
We do this by paying the learning provider directly in incremental payments throughout the course of the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees who are aged 16 – 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?
Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we do encourage all employers to pay the living wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
Time to complete
It will take between 12-24 months to complete.
